Rock Band – My Latest Addiction

September 8th, 2008

Not since my days playing EverQuest (from 1999-2002), have I been this addicted to a video game.  I had heard of Guitar Hero and knew that it was very popular, but playing the guitar never really interested me.  But then along came Rock Band in November of 2007 offering gamers an opportunity to rock out to their favorite songs by either strumming a guitar, banging on a set of drums, or singing along.  I may not have been interested in playing the guitar, but I have always wanted to learn to play the drums.  Still though, I was hesitant about spending $150 on a video game.  It wasn’t until I got some hands-on experience at my cousins’ during a family Xmas party that it finally got me hooked.

Still, $150 is nothing to sneeze at, and I spent the next two months convincing Alice and myself that it wouldn’t be gathering dust in the corner of the room after only a couple of weeks of playing time.  February comes along and my enthusiasm for the game doesn’t subside at all, so Alice decides to get me Rock Band as a Valentine’s Day gift. I don’t know if she regrets the purchase, but I am certainly loving it.  I have been playing it almost every single day since I got the game, and probably haven’t gone more than 3 consecutive days without playing it once.  Will I ever get tired of the game?  That’s a hard one to answer.  There’s just so much you can do in the game.  You can sing, play the drums, or play the guitar.  Or better yet, you could sing and play the guitar OR sing and play the drums at the same time.  If you get with bored with playing solo, you can play competitively or cooperatively with others in the same room or even online.  It makes a great party game!  And here’s one final piece that keeps you coming back for more.  Every week, Harmonix releases new songs for purchase; so the game never gets old.  I’ve been playing for 7 months and am still going strong.  And I am anxiously awaiting the release of Rock Band 2.

Championship Hockey Game – Geckos vs. Camels

March 19th, 2008

Six minutes into the game, the other team tallied first with a power play goal.  They scored again to open the second period and take a 2-0 lead.  A minute later, we were able to trim the deficit to one with a goal of our own.  But halfway through the 2nd period, the other team scored again, taking 3-1 lead.  With two minutes left in the second period, we were able to score and get within one goal again.

Both teams battled hard in the third period, but the score remained 3-2.  With a minute and a half left in the game, we were left with no choice, but to pull our goalie in favor of an extra skater.  And the gamble paid off.  We tied it just seconds after pulling the goalie and forced overtime.  Neither team was able to score in the 5 minute overtime period, and the winner would have to be decided by a shootout.  Neither team was able to score in the first round of the shootout.  We scored in the second round of the shootout and our goalie was able to stop the other team’s shooter again.  So at this point, our championship hopes were in the hands of our 17-year old high school kid.  Score and we win, miss and the other team gets a chance to tie.  And was he ever clutch.  He buries the puck in the top-left corner of the net, giving us a thrilling come-from-behind victory.  Woohoo!  It’s been five years since I won a free t-shirt!  =P

Final Score:
Geckos 4, Camels 3 (SO)

Stanley Keg Playoffs

March 12th, 2008

I think it has probably been atleast 4 years since my team has made it to the championship game, but we finally made it and will be playing next Wednesday 3/19/2008 @ 8:15PM. It took overtime for us to get out of the first round with a 4-3 victory. And last night’s 6-2 semi-final victory has us playing for the Stanley Keg next Wednesday. In years past, free dinner was provided to guests during the championship games. But that was years ago and under different management, so I don’t know if they still provide food during the game. I will have to find that out get back to you. Let me know if you will be interested in attending. If so, root for the Geckos (Blue Team) and keep an eye out for #6 (I think that’s my number; I will have to check on that too).

Final Scores:
Geckos 4, Suns 3 (OT)
Geckos 6, Desert Dogs 2

Another Break-in Attempt?

November 30th, 2007

A little past 7PM, while on my way home from work, I got a call from my home security system alerting me that the alarm had been set off.  Could it be another attempted break-in?  It was just about one year ago when someone attempted to break into my house.  No way!  Our family has had this house for thirty years without an incident.  There was just no way that we could have two attempted break-ins in two consecuitve years.  I rushed home as quickly as I could, but I was still about 10 minutes away.  When I got home the siren was still blaring, so I figured if there was a thief he would have been long gone by now. But I grabbed one of my hockey sticks just in case. When I checked the security system, it revealed to me that the master bedroom motion detector had been set off. That’s odd, since one of the doors or windows had to be breached if it was due to a thief. I made my way into the bedroom and noticed Alice’s birthday balloons were swaying in front of the motion detector. The alarm must have been set off when the heater kicked on. I guess I shouldn’t have put those balloons there. Man, I gave myself quite a scare!

DIY Shutters

November 15th, 2007

Alice and I wanted shutters instead of curtains or blinds for our windows, but having shutters professionally installed can get quite expensive.  Blinds.com offered pre-assembled shutters for the do-it-yourselfers, so I figured I would try it on one window and see how it would work out.  If it goes well, then I would continue with the DIY project.  If not, I would give in and hire a professional.  The custom-made Hunter Douglas vinyl shutter that I ordered a few weeks ago finally arrived, and I installed it in the master bathroom.  I have to admit, it was quite easy to install.  So if I Alice approves, I will be doing all the windows myself.
